So the Mortar Burns (2023) is a contemporary classical piece written for the Stevens Institute of Technology Concert Band. At over ten minutes, it is the largest classical composition I have realized, and explores themes of anger, violence, and perseverance through its aggressive tonality shifts and contrasting timbres.
I composed the piece, formatted the full and part scores, printed them, and worked with the concert band during rehearsals. I also am the bassoonist in the performance.
Sugar (2023) is a piece for cello, vocals, and fixed electronic track. Through extended cello techniques such as overpressure and bow position shifts, spoken word passages, and electronic ambience, I sought to explore how I view my own creative process and how it is positioned in a societal context.
I composed the piece and formatted the score. It was performed by cellist and vocalist Meaghan Burke.
